In him who is the source of my strength I have strength for everything

– Philippians 4:13

All power, force, energy, and strength have a source. Learned men, of all areas of knowledge, have been seeking and debating the ultimate source of power and life, itself. Without a source, without a core, without a generating element or catalyst power can not be sustained. True power and strength can not be maintained for long- it is empty and lacks essential substance.

Faith gives us access to the source of true power- God Himself. God is the undiminishing source of power and strength- and life, itself. The power of God is constant and steady; it is the force which continually sustains and upholds the living world. It is the source and wellspring from which we are replenished and renewed. That God is the source of all life and power is not a teaching from the leaders of churches and men of a different age. It is part of what God revealed about himself!

On the mountaintop, by the “burning bush”, God revealed His Name to Moses (Exodus 3:14). The ancients felt that there is great power in knowing the name of another; it allows for dialogue and communication, it reveals something of the other person, and it gives one a measure of control in the relationship. Such power was given to Moses, and us. More than just the communicative power, the name of God is filled with power and strength. The name Yahweh, or shortened to YHWH, means the “cause of all existence”. It is a name that is unique among the religious deities of ancient and modern times- it is not the name of something or the name given to some natural element. It is a name that represents the core source of life, existence, and power. His is the power that is in every part of our existence; continually generating, maintaining, and sustaining. It is this continual power which replenishes nature and renews all life; creation, of we are a part, is not stagnant but dynamic- as is its true source, God Himself.

This power came to us in The Incarnation, the Word of God made flesh- Jesus Christ. It is in Jesus that the infinite power and authority of The Father dwells and it is this power which he shares with us, his followers. He is the ultimate revelation of God and the visible vessel through which the infinite power can reach us.

He is eternal source of our strength- the “alpha and omega”, the beginning and end, the source and the one who sustains our strength.
